In 1911, the Weeks Act was initiated, allowing the government to purchase land for stream-flow protection, and to maintain the purchased lands as national forests. The first actual land purchases for the New Hampshire White Mountain National Forest was in 1914, and as a result Waterville lost a significant amount of land. The development of Waterville towards becoming a winter recreational area began in 1965, and in 1967 an act of the General Court caused Waterville to adopt the name Waterville Valley.

Children of Waterville Valley in grades K-8 are taught at Waterville Valley Elementary School, children in grades 9-12 are tuitioned at nearby Plymouth Regional High School.
