Sugar Hill, New Hampshire

Sugar Hill, New Hampshire is a very small community in Grafton County.  Unlike many towns in Grafton County that are located in the Lakes Region, this town is located in the White Mountains Region.  Containing only around 600 people, Sugar Hill is the definition of small-town New Hampshire, emitting that closeness to residents that one can only hope to achieve in the smallest of communities.  Being right in between the White Mountains and the Lakes Region has many benefits also.

Sugar Hill was originally part of a 1768 charter, which was then a town named Gunthwaite.  Gunthwaite was renamed Lisbon in 1824.  Although the town was originally settled in 1789, it remains one of New Hampshire's youngest town, because it was only just incorporated as a separate voting unit in 1962 after a considerable amount of litigation.  The name Sugar Hill comes from the large grove of sugar maple trees in the hills of the town.  In 1929 an Austrian skier by the name of Sig Buchmayr incorporated the first organized ski school in the United States, in Sugar Hill.  This was a resort to promote winter vacationing.
