Monroe, New Hampshire

Hidden up in the northwest corner of New Hampshire, tucked up near the Vermont border you will find the quaint and cozy town of Monroe.  This peaceful town is an ideal place to bring up a family because of its detachment from urban life.  Surrounded by about 875 wonderful people in the gorgeous atmosphere of the New Hampshire White Mountains, you’ll find all of the calmness and tranquility needed to relax and enjoy life at a leisurely pace.  If you're looking for serenity and peace away from bustling city life, Monroe is the place for you.

In 1762 Governor John Wentworth created a grant, for which he nominated 64 residents.  He wished to create a large town or series of towns, so the grant stated that 64 farmers were to clear, farm, and settle one tenth of their land, or they would forfeit the grant.  Only two of these farmers actually made the attempt, so the charter was extended for another 5 years.  By the end of the allotted time period, 11 of the farmers had finished settling their land, and these plots together formed the town of Lyman.  However these plots of land were bisected by a steep mountain known as Gardners's Mountain.  Due to the difficulty in climbing this mountain, they kept the east side of the mountain Lyman, and made the west side Monroe in 1854.  The name Monroe is derived from former president of the United States, James Monroe.

Monroe is the perfect town for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.  The variety of things to do in this outdoor oasis is simply spectacular.  There are miles upon miles of snowmobile trails, biking trails, and even cross country skiing trails to explore.  On top of all this, Monroe is a great town for any hunters because Monroe is in the heart of the White Mountains.  Fishermen (and women) are at home here as well, thanks to the many streams and ponds in the area.  Monroe, NH, is also a great place to raise children.  There are several youth programs available to choose from in town, such as youth soccer, baseball, basketball, and even the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.

Monroe is a member of SAU 77, and has their own school, the Monroe Consolidated School, for children for kindergarten through eighth grade, but sends the children off to St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont for their high school years.  There is very little need for a high school in Monroe, because there are typically less than one hundred students attending the Monroe Consolidated School at a time.  However, St. Johnsbury Academy is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious schools in all of Vermont.
