The town of Thornton, New Hampshire, was chartered in 1763. Thornton was named after Dr. Matthew Thornton. The town was granted to him in return for his service as a surgeon in an exploratory expedition known as the Pepperell Expedition in 1745. Matthew Thornton held a practice in Merrimack, and was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, a justice of the Superior Court, speaker of the House of Representatives, member of the NH State Senate, delegate to the Continental Congress, and president of the state after the Revolutionary War ceased. No actual settlements were established under the original grant in 1763 and a second grant was issued in 1768. People began actually occupying Thornton in 1770.

The children of Thornton in grades Kindergarten through 8 are educated at Thornton Central School. Thornton teens in grades 9 through 12 are educated at Plymouth Regional High School.
