Haverhill, New Hampshire
Haverhill, New Hampshire, is a mid-sized town located on the western edge of the state in Grafton County. Populated with just fewer than 5000 people, Haverhill is a large town when compared to most other towns in this part of the state. Haverhill borders the Connecticut River and has much to offer those living not only in town but just across the river in Vermont as well.
Haverhill was initially settled by residents of Haverhill, Massachusetts, the town that lends Haverhill, NH, its name. It is unknown exactly what year the town was formed, but Haverhill was incorporated in 1763 and became the seat of Grafton County ten years later. For many years Haverhill was a town of great importance due to its location at the very end of Old Province Road, the road that connected settlements in the western and northern regions of the state with the seacoast towns of Dover, Portsmouth and Exeter. When the railroad came to town in the village area of Haverhill known as Woodsville, the town’s importance grew as more and more goods could be traded between the northern and western regions and the state’s seacoast.
Two-hundred years ago, the majority people of Haverhill worked in mills, tilled the soil, raised livestock or tried their hand at a specialized trade. Today, Haverhill is still a blue-collar town with as much as fifty-percent of the town’s workforce living within its boundaries. Classic New England in both look and feel, Haverhill is a mere twenty minutes from Franconia Notch State Park and the wondrous natural formations it boasts. Haverhill is surrounded by mountains and wrapped in a thick forest of deep green pines, deciduous elms, oaks and birch trees as well as more wildlife than is seen at any zoo.
Haverhill is a member of School Administrative Unit #23 and is a part of the Haverhill School Cooperative, which includes the nearby towns of Bath, Benton, Piermont, and Warren. All schools in the co-op are located in Haverhill, or its small village of Woodsville. The co-op serves to educate students from kindergarten through the twelfth grade.
