The town of Plymouth was named after the Plymouth colony is Massachusetts. However in 1792, a portion of the land was divided and incorporated as Hebron, combined with a small part of Groton, New Hampshire. Plymouth State University was founded here in 1871 as a regular school, which then turned into a teachers' college, a state college, and now a state university.
