Campton, New Hampshire

Campton, New Hampshire, is a town of about 3000 residents located just northwest of the Lakes Region part of the state and just south of the White Mountain National Forest (with a small portion of the forest within town lines).  Situated in the foothills of the White Mountains, Campton contains hilly and rocky terrain, twisting, winding roads and views of the surrounding area that rival those found anywhere else in New England.  Not too small, yet not too big, not too far away, yet not too close, Campton’s location just might be as close to perfect as you can find.

Like many towns in this part of the state, Campton was first chartered in 1761.  However, the residents failed to meet the conditions set forth in the charter, so the town was chartered again in 1767.  Farming was difficult in this part of the state due to the rocky, uneven soil, so hunting, trapping and logging were a large part of daily life for many years.  Today, Campton, NH, is a busy, yet quiet town with all the modern conveniences one would expect to find in a town of this size.

Campton has the good fortune of north-south Route 93 passing within a mile or two of the town’s center.  This lends to easy travel throughout the state and opens up a world of opportunities for employment, entertainment, dining, sightseeing and more.  Campton itself is home to the Owl’s Nest Golf Course, as well as the Blair State Forest and the Livermore Falls State Forest.  Outdoor activities within town include hiking, boating on the nearby Squam Lake or Newfound Lake, camping, fishing, swimming, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.  This list is by no means all-inclusive – there is much to do in this region of the state.

Campton, NH, is a member of SAU #48 and operates the Campton Elementary School for resident students of kindergarten age through the eighth grade.  All remaining students are tuitioned at the Pemi-Baker Cooperative, along with students from Ashland, Holderness, Plymouth, Rumney, Thornton, and Wentworth, NH.  At this time, Campton has no plans to construct their own high school in town.
