Hanover, New Hampshire

Located in Grafton County on the state border with Vermont, is Hanover, New Hampshire, a busy town of over 11,000 people.  Beautiful to look at and even better to live within, Hanover is situated right on the Connecticut River and is only a stone’s throw from White River Junction, Vermont.  Hanover is one of the most populous towns on New Hampshire’s western edge.

The area to become Hanover was granted in 1761, but remained primarily unpopulated until four years later as settlers finally trickled in.  Named for Hanover Parish, the home parish of settlers who had come from Lisbon, Connecticut, the town slowly took shape.  In 1769, the Reverend Eleazar Wheelock, with help and direction from the NH government, started Dartmouth College.  The college was originally intended to help educate Native Americans and a 300-acre area of land in southwestern Hanover was designated to house the school.  That parcel of land, known then as Dresden, was one of 16 communities that had, in the 1780’s, defected to Vermont when Vermont briefly withdrew from the Union over a border dispute.  Today Dartmouth College is one of New Hampshire’s premier adult education facilities.

Hanover, NH, is one of the state’s finest communities.  The convenience of modern shopping facilities and entertainment venues coupled with the great wide open expanses of the western NH countryside make Hanover a very desirable town to live in.  The White Mountains are a short ride north, while the Lakes Region of the state can be reached in about a half hour.  Route 91 flows north to south through Hanover and Route 89 lies less than ten minutes south and can get you to points south and east in very little time.

Being a college town, Hanover has just about anything you would need right in town.  And in the winter months, Hanover has over half a dozen ski resorts within minutes of the town’s center.  Living in Hanover, NH, is a treat in and of itself, but driving over the Connecticut River brings you into Vermont, a beautiful state with much to see and do.
