Lyme was one of the many towns granted in 1761 along the Connecticut River, separating New Hampshire form Vermont. Lyme originally got its name from Old Lyme, which is located directly at the mouth of the Connecticut River. For a long time the name of the town was spelled as “Lime” in official state papers, but was later decreed to be a misspelling. Most of the original grantees for this town were from Palmer and Brimfield, Massachusetts, or from Londonderry, New Hampshire. Lyme was also one of the towns involved with a border dispute between New Hampshire and Vermont, before Vermont was re-admitted to the Union in 1791.
