Holderness, New Hampshire
Set in the northwestern part of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire lies Holderness. Holderness was given its name in 1751, after Robert Darcy, who was England’s Fourth Earl of Holderness, and was the United States Ambassador to Venice and a minister under King George III. He became close friends with Governor Benning Wentworth (Wentworth is the man who funded the projects for both New Hampshire towns Lyman and Monroe) and together they founded the town of Holderness.
Holderness is a great town for any outdoorsman. Whether you’re interested in trout fishing or hunting several types of game, there are vast amounts of woods and water for you to explore. During the winter there are many cross country skiing trails open, as well as many snowmobiling trails and downhill skiing trails available. Holderness belongs to New Hampshire SAU #48, which also encompasses the education of children from the towns of Ashland, Campton, Plymouth, Rumney, Thornton, and Wentworth. Holderness has it’s own school for those children who are in grades kindergarten through eighth grade, the Holderness Central School, but the remaining students are sent off to Plymouth Regional High School for grades 9 through 12. Aside from actual education, the children of Holderness have access to an amazing number of extracurricular activities from sports to clubs outside of school. The Boy and Girl Scouts of America have branches into Holderness, as well as having youth baseball, football, soccer, basketball, and hockey available.
