The land to become Grafton, NH, was first granted in 1761, but the grant was surrendered by poplar vote the following year. The land was again granted in 1769 to other colonists, including Founding Father, John Hancock. The town was incorporated in 1778 and was named in honor of Augustus Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton and relative of Governor Benning Wentworth. Fitzroy was also a strong supporter of American independence while in the English government.
Grafton was a slow growing town with little resources beyond an abundance of lumber and a little waterpower from nearby rivers. This was enough, however, to give the community a leg up on other towns in the delivery of wood products such as lumber for homes and top quality furniture. Hunting was also a popular means of support for many years, lending to fur trading and the sale of game meats such as rabbit, venison and more. In 1809, a local farmer named Sam Ruggles discovered large mica deposits on his property and promptly began a mining operation that lasted for over 150 years. Eventually the mine was opened to the public and is now visited by thousands of amateur spelunkers each year. Aside from the mine’s tourism, Grafton is mostly a bedroom community for residents working in the larger towns of Plymouth, Tilton, Lebanon and Canaan.
Grafton, NH, is a member of School Administrative Unit #62 and a part of the Mascoma Valley Regional School District, along with the towns of Canaan, Dorchester, Enfield and Orange. All Grafton students are educated at the Canaan Elementary School, the Indian River School, then the Mascoma Valley Regional High School, all located in Canaan, NH. Grafton has no plans to build schools in town in the foreseeable future.
