Bristol, New Hampshire

Bristol, New Hampshire, is a quaint little New England town located in the center of the state in Grafton County.  This town has a population of about 3200 people and is situated just south of Newfound Lake deep within the Lakes Region of the Granite State.  Bristol is a town full of hard-working individuals who take full advantage of their hometown’s near-perfect location in the heart of this beautiful state.

Bristol was created using parts of New Chester (now Hill) and Bridgewater.  The town was incorporated in 1819 and was named after Bristol, England, because the fine sand and clay deposits found in the area closely resembled the “Bristol Sand” used by the Brits to make fine china and pottery.  The sand used in Bristol, New Hampshire, was used to create “Bristol Bricks”, hailed as a superior building material.  With the Pemigewasset River running through town, Bristol quickly became a manufacturing center, producing linen, leather, paper, furniture, lumber and woolen items, in addition to their fine bricks.

With the northern town line bordering the southern two-thirds of Newfound Lake, Bristol also became a tourist destination with cottages and hotels constructed lakeside.  Most of these have since been sold off or torn down, but Bristol still brings in its fair share of tourists throughout the year.

Bristol, NH, is a busy town with some industry, yet it still manages to cling to the ideals of living in peace, quiet and tranquility in the thick New Hampshire forests.  Its fantastic location and jaw-dropping scenery cause visitors to return again and again, with many looking to purchase their own little slice of heaven here in central New Hampshire.  Bristol is convenient to the rest of the state by way of Route 93 which travels north-south and resides within two miles of Bristol’s town center.  The state capital of Concord is just a short ride south, with Manchester and Nashua but a few minutes beyond.  The awe-inspiring beauty of the White Mountain National Forest is less than 45 minutes north while the Atlantic seacoast of New Hampshire can be reached inside an hour.  Being located in the center of the state has its benefits.

Bristol is a member of SAU #4 and a part of the Newfound Area School District.  The Bristol Elementary School, as well as the Newfound Memorial Middle School and the Newfound High School are all based in Bristol.
