Ashland, New Hampshire
Situated just three miles west of the geographical center of the state of New Hampshire, you will find Ashland, a small town of about 2100 people. Located southwest of Squam Lake and northwest of Lake Winnipesaukee, Ashland is full of fun-loving people who enjoy taking advantage of all the great outdoor activities their location affords them.
The area to become Ashland was originally a part of Holderness. Holderness, NH, was granted in 1751, but remained unsettled until after the French and Indian War. Re-granted in 1761, the town still wasn’t settled until 1763. Holderness had the good fortune of residing next to the Squam River which provided plenty of water power for the town’s soon-to-be-constructed mills. Holderness began focusing on industry and, in 1868, an older part of town known as Holderness Village was separated from the town proper and renamed Ashland, after an estate owned by Secretary of State and Senator from Kentucky, Henry Clay.
Today, Ashland is, for the most part, a bedroom community. There is not an abundance of industry or business within Ashland town lines and the residents of this quiet little town want to keep it that way. The largest employer in town is the Rochester Shoe Tree Company, with just over 100 workers and over 70% of Ashland’s workforce commutes to other towns for employment.
Ashland’s location is as close to perfect as you can get – nestled in the thick woods of central New Hampshire, surrounded by lakes, rivers and streams, within a short distance of the White Mountain National Forest; the possibilities for outdoor adventure are endless in Ashland. If you’d prefer to spend some time on the state’s Atlantic coastline, you can be there within an hour when you live in Ashland. Sportsmen (and women) enjoy the hunting and fishing, while others are happy to take in the amazing scenery that surrounds this cozy little hamlet. Ashland is a member of School Administrative Unit #2 and maintains the Ashland Elementary School for resident students between kindergarten and the eighth grade. Students in grades nine through twelve attend the Plymouth Regional High School and are a part of the Pemi-Baker Cooperative, which includes Campton, Holderness, Plymouth, Rumney, Thornton, and Wentworth, NH.
