Alexandria, New Hampshire, is a small town located in the central part of the state, just west of Lake Winnipesaukee. With a population of about 1600 people, Alexandria is not one of the larger towns in the state, but it is one of the most beautiful. Surrounded by thick forests, crystal clear rivers and lakes as well as the towering mountains of the Appalachian chain, Alexandria is something out of a picture postcard.

Alexandria’s history is vague, but the town was incorporated in 1753 and two years later, in 1755, five Colonial Governors sat down in Alexandria to discuss recent events put forth by the French. It seems the French had constructed a large number of forts and trading posts which nearly surrounded the colonies – this precipitated what came to be known as the French and Indian War, since the British who controlled the colonies at the time felt the French were in collaboration with the Natives of the area. Another dark historical fact about Alexandria is that the first person to die in the United States’ Civil War, Luther C. Ladd, is purported to have lived there.

Alexandria today is far from a morbid historical side note – the town is an active community of nature-loving people who enjoy living well outside the confines of city life. Alexandria’s town center has several state parks within minutes as well as more than a couple of golf courses. Hiking trails wind throughout the area and watersports like boating, fishing, canoeing and, in the winter months, skating, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, on Newfound Lake are very popular in Alexandria, NH.

North-south Route 93 lies only a few miles east of Alexandria’s town center giving residents quick and easy access to the rest of the Granite State. The state’s capital of Concord lies about 25 miles south with the two largest cities in the state, Manchester and Nashua, residing only about fifteen to thirty minutes beyond that. Alexandria residents can be lying on the beach in Hampton or visiting historic Portsmouth and Dover in just about an hour or can be absorbing the stunning beauty of the White Mountain National Forest in less time than that.

Alexandria is a member of School Administrative Unit #4 and is a part of the Newfound Area School District, which includes Bridgewater, Bristol, Danbury, Groton, Hebron, and New Hampton. Alexandria’s kindergarten-age students attend the Alexandria Village School, while all remaining students are educated at the Bristol Elementary School, in Bristol, then the Newfound Memorial Middle School and the Newfound Regional High School, both also located in nearby Bristol, NH.
