Croydon, New Hampshire
Croydon, New Hampshire, is a small town located in Sullivan County in the western half of the state. Croydon is home to slightly more than 700 people all nestled in the rolling hills and scenic mountains of western New Hampshire. Residents of this small community enjoy the peace and tranquility their little town affords them but still welcome visitors and new residents alike with open arms and warm smiles.
The town of Croydon was chartered in 1763 and incorporated that same year. A town of mostly farmers, Croydon has never had a large population – in fact, the town’s current population is only 175 residents higher than it was during the first U.S. census, taken in 1790.
Despite its small size, Croydon offers both residents and visitors activities to enjoy in the sweet New Hampshire countryside. For example, there is a YMCA in town, there are several small parks, campgrounds, and plenty of opportunities for fishing and boating. Croydon has a beach for waterfront recreation, there are trails for hiking, biking and snowmobiling and plenty of thick woods in which to go hunting. Residents love Croydon for its small-town feel, while visitors come back time and again for the natural beauty and relative seclusion. It seems there’s something for everyone in Croydon, NH.
Croydon lies between Grantham and Newport, both of which have more stores, shops and restaurants than Croydon. The state capital of Concord, NH, resides less than a half-hour’s drive southeast and the megalopolis of Manchester is only ten minutes beyond. Both of these cities have nearly anything anyone could desire, allowing smaller towns like Croydon to exist without the need to invite a Wal-Mart or Target store into the community.
Croydon is a member of School Administrative Unit #43, along with Newport and Claremont. All students within Croydon are educated in neighboring Newport, from kindergarten through high school. The student population within Croydon is less than 130, so there are no plans to construct schools in town at this time.
