Strafford County New Hampshire
Strafford County, New Hampshire, is located in the east/southeast portion of the state, just north of Rockingham County. Strafford County was one of the original five counties set up in New Hampshire in 1769. The county gets its name from William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford, who was wrongly thought to have been an ancestor of Governor John Wentworth. While the two were distantly related, William Wentworth had no children and therefore Governor Wentworth could not have been his descendant.
The county seat in Strafford County is Dover, NH, and has been since the official organization of the county in 1771. In 1840, the overall size of the county was reduced with the creation of Belknap County to the northwest. With barely over a dozen towns within its confines, Strafford County is one of the smaller counties in the state. Strafford County towns include Barrington, Dover, Durham, Farmington, Lee, Madbury, Middleton, Milton, New Durham, Rochester, Rollinsford, Somersworth, and Strafford (the town). The two largest, Dover and Rochester, are actually cities and account for over half the population of the entire county. The smallest towns are Madbury and Middleton, both with populations under 1800 people.
