Somersworth, New Hampshire

The small town of Somersworth lies on the border between New Hampshire and Maine, just north of the historic town of Dover, NH.  Small in size but big in personality, Somersworth has nearly 12,000 residents and countless businesses lining Routes 16A, 9 and 108.  With commercial properties maintaining the bulk of local taxes, residents in Somersworth enjoy a lower tax rate than most of the residents in surrounding communities.

Settled prior to 1700 as a part of Dover, the Somersworth area was known as Sligo at the time, so-named for Sligo, Ireland.  In 1729, it was dubbed the parish of “Summersworth”, meaning “Summer Town” because, during the summer months, ministers would preach there.  The parish became its own town in 1754 when Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth incorporated it at the residents’ behest.  A clerical error during the incorporation contracted the name to its current spelling.  Until 1849 the Somersworth boundaries included what is now Rollinsford.  In 1893, the town was incorporated as a city.

Somersworth is a busy little town with plenty of shopping, plenty of services and plenty to keep you occupied.  There is a multi-screen cinema in town, many fine and casual dining restaurants, bowling, a museum, and more.  Outdoor activities in Somersworth include swimming, golfing, hiking, biking, boating, camping and, in the winter months, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, tubing and snowshoeing.  For your shopping pleasure, Somersworth is home to a Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target, Market Basket and dozens more shops and department stores.  For air travel, Somersworth is a quick twenty-minute drive to Pease International Tradeport or about forty-five to the Manchester Airport in Manchester, New Hampshire.  Somersworth has easy access to Route 16, also called the Spaulding Turnpike, which heads north, deep into the mountainous regions of the state which itself holds many unique and breathtaking views and attractions.

Somersworth also offers several youth group organizations, such as the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, a local 4H group, and many organized youth sports, including baseball, hockey and basketball.  Multiple municipal parks dot the town giving children and their families a place to relax and play.

Somersworth is a part of School Administrative Unit # 56 and maintains its own elementary school and middle school for children of kindergarten age through grade eight.  High school age children are educated at the Somersworth High School and Regional Vocational Center, also located in Somersworth.

A busy town that manages to hang on to its New England roots, Somersworth has a great location, many conveniences and low taxes.  It’s no wonder why so many people want to live here.  If you might be one of them, your first move should be to call Jim Miller Bean Group at (603) 801-3987.  We’re here to help guide you through the home purchasing process and answer your questions in a prompt, courteous manner.  Call us today to find out why New Hampshire is one of the fastest-growing states in the country.
