New Durham, New Hampshire

Situated near the center of New Hampshire lies New Durham, a small town of about 2500 residents.  Increasing its population five-fold over the past thirty-five years, New Durham has grown in leaps and bounds since the early 1970’s and has only recently reduced the number of homes being constructed in the area.  Rife with thick woods and a sprawling countryside, New Durham is the ideal location to start a family or retire in tranquil surroundings.

New Durham began its existence as “Cocheco Township” when it was granted as such in 1749.  A great number of the township’s settlers had relocated from the town of Durham in southeastern New Hampshire and when the town was finally incorporated in 1762, it was forever named New Durham.  The town’s residents were mostly of farming ilk, with few of the townsfolk doing anything but.  The population remained very small, only several hundred, for centuries until the automobile became prominent and affordable for the masses.  At that that point, the farms’ soils were playing out and farms were closing down.  Residents, using their new vehicles, were able to work in other towns and cities, yet return home to their quiet little town each night.  This led to New Durham’s current status of the quaint bedroom community it is known as today.

New Durham has little commercial or industrial business in town, and resident want to keep it that way.  Much of the town’s population enjoys the outdoors and there are fewer places to do so in such peaceful surroundings.  Swimming, hiking, boating and biking abound in this classic New England setting.  The White Mountains are a quick 40 minutes north, Concord only 20 minutes to the south and the exciting New Hampshire seacoast is just a forty-five minute drive southeast.  The most popular recreation in the area, however, is New Hampshire’s largest lake, Lake Winnipesaukee.  With mountains surrounding 72 square miles of water and over 250 islands to see and explore, there’s always something to do at the lake.  And in the winter months, Lake Winnipesaukee is used for skating, ice fishing and snowmobiling.  With Lake Winnipesaukee only ten minutes from New Durham, it’s a quick ride – and with so much happening, you’ll always find something to do.

New Durham is a part of SAU #49 and a member of the Governor Wentworth Regional School District, along with Brookfield, Effingham, Ossipee, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro.  New Durham students attend the New Durham Elementary School, the Kingswood Regional Middle School and the Kingswood Regional High School.
