South Hampton, New Hampshire

The tiny community of South Hampton, NH may have only 900 residents, but what it lacks in population it more than makes up for in seclusion and serenity.  This peaceful town has no industry or commercial business to speak of and is comprised almost entirely of residential homes.  South Hampton lies on the NH/MA boundary and borders Amesbury, Massachusetts to the south. 

South Hampton is located two towns south and west of Hampton, NH and though it is similarly named, the two towns were never one.  Instead, South Hampton was one of the first towns to be granted township by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth after New Hampshire separated from Massachusetts in 1741.  Following a brief border dispute, South Hampton was created from parts of Amesbury and Salisbury, Massachusetts.  As years passed, parishes broke away from South Hampton and formed the towns of Seabrook, Newton and Hampton Falls.  In 1824, South Hampton became a little larger thanks to territory gained from East Kingston.

South Hampton is the definition of a bedroom community: little business, mostly housing.  Residents of this little town plan to keep it that way by restricting business permits while allowing limited residential construction.  The small, thickly-wooded neighborhoods give privacy in a natural setting and allow those fortunate enough to live there the peace and tranquility that southern NH has become so well known for.  South Hampton is not without available activities, however.  There is a municipal park with tennis court, hiking, biking and cross-country skiing trails, campgrounds, fishing and boating as well as organized youth sports including baseball, basketball and soccer.  The NH seacoast is only twenty minutes east and the Pease International Tradeport is less than a half hour north, so air travel is close and convenient. 

South Hampton is a part of SAU#21 and sends it students from kindergarten through the eighth grade to the South Hampton Barnard School.  High school age students are tuitioned at the neighboring Amesbury High School in Amesbury, MA.  Due to South Hampton’s tiny student population, there are no current plans to construct a high school in town.
