Plainfield, New Hampshire

Plainfield, New Hampshire, is a Sullivan County town located on the western edge of the state.  Plainfield has a population of about 2500 hard-working people who enjoy living in this beautiful part of the state.  Industrious and inventive, Plainfield residents are New Hampshire to the core and will welcome you to their town with open arms.

Plainfield was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1761 and incorporated that same year.  In 1780 a piece of Plainfield was combined with a piece of Grantham to create Meridan Parish, the site of the Kimball Union Academy, built in 1813.  Seventy-six years after Plainfield lost land to the creation of Meriden Parish, the town annexed the entire parish back into the fold.

Plainfield used the Connecticut River for many years to power mills in an effort to produce grains, linen, lumber and more, but the competition from nearby White River Junction, VT, and Claremont, NH, proved more than Plainfield could handle and as time went on, most mills failed and closed their doors.  Plainfield has been host to several farms over the years, producing grains, livestock, dairy and more.  Today, Plainfield is a busy little community with several retail stores and restaurants.  Most residents, however, work in larger nearby communities and return to Plainfield for rest and relaxation.

Plainfield is one of New Hampshire’s great little towns that’s full of character yet sits in quiet repose.  The town itself has a few of its old farms still remaining, such as Taylor, Riverview and Edgewater Farm, but also has a couple of small businesses including a heavy equipment dealer, cabinet maker and several more.  But again, most of Plainfield’s workforce is employed in other towns making this a bedroom community at its heart.

Plainfield, like most other New England towns, is focused on the education of its youth.  The town is a member of School Administrative Unit # 32 and educates local students from kindergarten age up through the eighth grade.  High school students from Plainfield are tuitioned over at Lebanon, NH at the Lebanon High School.  Talk of building a high school in Plainfield has been bandied about, but there are no solid plans to do so as yet.

As with most New Hampshire communities, peace and quiet are the words of the day in Plainfield.  If you want a busy lifestyle with things happening around you at all times of the day, New Hampshire is not the state for you.  But if you’re looking for a respite from the hectic, fast-paced world, Plainfield or nearly any other Granite State community will fit the bill.  Homes are often on the market in Plainfield and most other New Hampshire towns, but it helps if you have someone in your corner fighting to get you the perfect home in the perfect community at the perfect price.  That someone is Jim Miller of Bean Group.  Call Jim right now at (603) 801-3987 – punctual, courteous and honest, Jim wants to find you exactly what you’re looking for.  Call him today for a no-pressure, no-obligation discussion of what New Hampshire can do for you.
