Kensington, New Hampshire

A small community of barely over 2000, Kensington is a tiny residential town with plenty of privacy and very little industry to speak of. Quiet, wooded lots on winding, tree-lined back roads give residents a sense of privacy that’s hard to find in today’s busy world.
The small town of Kensington was not always its own entity. Originally a parish of Hampton, NH, Kensington was incorporated in 1737 by Massachusetts’ then-Colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher. At the time New Hampshire was not yet a state and remained a part of the Massachusetts province. The town was so-named for Edward Rich, Earl of Holland and Baron Kensington.
Kensington had always been a farming community and still maintains streets with such names as “Stumpfield”, “Wild Pasture” and “Muddy Pond”. There is very little industry in town with a restaurant, convenience store, tractor store, lumber store, ice cream shop and the local electric company making up nearly all of the commercial base. The farms have all but died out and the town has become a bedroom community for people working in nearby Exeter and Portsmouth as well as Amesbury and Salisbury, Massachusetts. That is not to say that there is nothing to do in Kensington. The town has a municipal park for playing field sports and has several organized youth sports including baseball and soccer. Kensington is located within seven miles of the ocean, four miles of Interstate Route 95 and right next door to historic Exeter, NH.
Kensington is a part of SAU# 16 and maintains its own elementary school for its resident students entering kindergarten all the way through grade five. Older students attend the Exeter Region Cooperative School District with grades six through eight going to the Exeter Cooperative Middle School and high school age children attending Exeter High School. Other towns included in the Cooperative are Brentwood, Exeter, East Kingston, Newfields, Stratham and Hampton Falls.
