Barrington, New Hampshire
Barrington, New Hampshire is a geographically large town with about 8500 residents in all. Located in Strafford County, much of the town is heavily-wooded, undeveloped land covering nearly 49 square miles. Great for sportsman and those who enjoy the quiet of the great outdoors, Barrington is also conveniently located between Dover to the east and Concord to the west.
First settled in 1699, Barrington was incorporated in 1722 and named for Massachusetts governor Samuel Shute of Barrington Hall. Once the state’s third largest town, Barrington was slow to be settled in due to rocky soil making the crops difficult to cultivate. In 1820 Barrington lost about half of its land area to a new, upstart town called Strafford, mainly due to the distance residents on the far side of Barrington had to travel for town meetings and the like.
Though there are several businesses operating out of Barrington, the town is widely regarded as a bedroom community for those working in the surrounding towns. That’s not to say there isn’t plenty to do in town. For the outdoorsman (and women) among us, Barrington offers camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, hunting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Barrington has several municipal parks; perfect for picnics, jogging or just spending time with your kids watching the clouds pass by. And speaking of kids, Barrington has various organized youth sports including baseball, soccer, football and basketball, as well as group activities such as the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.
Barrington has easy east-west travel access by way of Route 4, which goes all the way from the state’s capital of Concord, east to the port city of Portsmouth. The town is also fortunate enough to have north-south Route 125 slicing through its center, lending to a speedy ride to Rochester (north) or Massachusetts, to the south. No matter where you want to go, you can get there with relative ease when you live in Barrington.
Barrington is a part of SAU# 74 and educates its school-age children from kindergarten through the eighth grade. High school-age children are tuitioned at either the Dover High School, located in Dover, NH or the Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, located in Northwood, NH. There is currently no plan in the works to construct a new high school in Barrington.
