Sullivan County New Hampshire

Sullivan County, New Hampshire, is one of ten counties in the state and is located on its western edge.  The county is home to just over 40,000 people and is best described as mostly undeveloped land interspersed with quaint New England towns containing 1000-2000 residents each.  The exception to this is the city of Claremont which itself contains over 25% of the entire county’s population.

Sullivan County, New Hampshire, like nearly all other counties with this moniker, was named in honor of the American Revolutionary War hero, Brigadier General John Sullivan (1740-1795).  Before becoming a war hero, John Sullivan practiced law in Portsmouth and Durham, NH and was designated a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1774.  After the war, he was appointed as the state’s Attorney General and was elected as President of New Hampshire (now more humbly referred to as “Governor”) three times.  Sullivan was also appointed as a federal judge by George Washington himself – a post he held until his death.

Sullivan County was created on July 5, 1827.  Land from Cheshire County was used to bring Sullivan County into existence and Newport, NH, was picked to be the county seat.  Sullivan County consists of 528 square miles and includes fourteen sprawling towns and just one city.  The towns within Sullivan County are Acworth, Charlestown, Cornish, Croydon, Goshen, Grantham, Langdon, Lempster, Newport, Plainfield, Springfield, Sunapee, Unity, Washington.

By far, the biggest attraction in all of Sullivan County has to be Lake Sunapee.  Sullivan shares the lake with Merrimack County to the east, but the town of Sunapee itself, as well as the looming Mount Sunapee, both lie within Sullivan County.  Lake Sunapee not only attracts visitors from throughout the state, but also draws crowds from the remaining New England states, other east coast states, and even as far away as Canada.  Lake Sunapee offers all kinds of water-borne activities, organized events (boating, fishing, etc.) and several beaches on which to soak up the warm New Hampshire sunshine.  The lake also boasts three lighthouses listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The lake itself has 6.5 square miles of open water and nearly 70 miles of shoreline when you include the many small inlets, waterways and islands.  You can find larger lakes in New Hampshire, but none more beautiful than Lake Sunapee.

Sullivan County shows off New Hampshire’s stunning natural beauty everywhere you turn.  Thick forests, rolling hills, picturesque mountain scenery, pristine rivers and lakes – what’s not to love?  If you’re considering a move to New Hampshire, you might think about Sullivan County.  A great escape from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind, Sullivan County often has dozens of homes for sale on the NH real estate market, but in these quiet little towns, they tend to sell quickly.  If you really want “an in”, you need someone in your corner, someone looking out for you.  In the real estate market of the Granite State, that someone should be Jim Miller of Bean Group.  Jim is a buyer agent, someone who works hard for you, specifically to find you exactly the home you want in exactly the community you seek.  Jim understands the ins and outs of the often volatile real estate market and will put his expertise to work for you.  Call him right now at (603) 801-3987 – it just might be the best call you’ll ever make.
