Sharon, New Hampshire
One of the best-kept secrets in southern New Hampshire has to be the out-of-the-way hamlet of Sharon. Located in Hillsborough County, this tiny town of less than 400 people is easily overlooked, which is exactly how most of the residents prefer it.
The area to become Sharon was first settled in 1738 as a part of Peterborough. Then known as Peterborough Slip or Sliptown, Sharon became a part of Temple when that town broke off from Peterborough and incorporated. Finally, in 1786, Splitown residents petitioned for and were granted their own township, which they promptly named Sharon, after the Connecticut town of the same name. Sharon, NH was incorporated in 1791.
Sharon is not a town filled with excitement and goings-on. It is a laid back, quiet community of people who cherish the tranquility their little town provides. This affluent village has less than 120 homes throughout and with the Sharon Town Forest and several other conservation holdings making up almost 50% of the town’s acreage, this town has been and will continue to be very slow to grow. Sharon is located about thirty miles from Manchester and Nashua and about twenty miles from the college town of Keene. Sharon has been the home of the Sharon Arts Center since 1947 and allows local artists a place to exhibit their art. The Sharon Arts Center also offers courses on several different arts and crafts.
Sharon is a member of SAU# 1 and the Contoocook Valley Cooperative School District which includes the towns of Antrim, Bennington, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Hancock, Peterborough and Temple. With its tiny student population, Sharon is not planning on building its own schools any time soon.
