Roxbury, New Hampshire
Roxbury, New Hampshire, is a small town located in the southwestern corner of the state. Roxbury has the distinction of having the lowest population in all of Cheshire County, ringing in at only 250 residents. Roxbury is located less than five miles outside of the college town of Keene, making shopping trips and other excursions fast and easy.
Roxbury was originally a part of the territory called Mondanock Number 5, one in a line of defensive settlements along New Hampshire’s western edge designed to fend off attacks from local natives. Around 1796, residents in the outlying areas of Packersfield (now Nelson), Marlborough, and Dublin banded together in an effort to combine the portions of their respective towns to make one town that would be more convenient for all involved. Their initial petition failed, but was granted 16 years later on their second attempt in 1812. The town was incorporated as Roxbury, so-named for a village outside Boston, Massachusetts – now a suburb of the same.
The American Civil War was especially hard on Roxbury residents. A surprising percentage of soldiers from this town were killed in action and with very few males returning to town, much of the remaining population chose to leave Roxbury and return to family and friends living in other towns and states. Eventually, the town repopulated, drawing in workers to labor at the granite quarries, for which Roxbury was well known. The quarries were the largest in the state for a time, but have since closed their doors.
Roxbury is the quintessential bedroom community. With no industry or commercial interests to speak of, a full 100% of the Roxbury workforce commutes to nearby towns, Vermont or Massachusetts for employment. This sits fine with residents of this tiny borough, as they would rather drive to work than invite industry and commerce into town. Pollution is nearly nonexistent in Roxbury and the community plans on keeping it that way. And as mentioned, Roxbury isn’t far from Keene, which can provide most anything residents may need. Keene is a youth-oriented college town that offers a multitude of shopping, dining and entertainment options.
Roxbury, NH, is a member of SAU #38, the Monadnock Regional School District, along with the towns of Fitzwilliam, Gilsum, Richmond, Sullivan, Surry, Swanzey, and Troy. Roxbury has no schools of its own and sends students of all grades to Monadnock Regional schools in nearby towns. Roxbury has no plans to construct schools at this point.
