Pembroke, New Hampshire

When it comes to location in the Granite State, it’s hard to beat that of Pembroke, New Hampshire.  Pembroke is situated directly between the cities of Concord, the state capital, and Manchester, the state’s most populated metropolis.  Pembroke is a town of about 7500 people, most of whom work in the two neighboring cities and return home to the relative tranquility of their friendly, yet busy, little town.

Pembroke began its existence as a land grant to the heirs of Captain John Lovewell and given the name Lovewell’s Town, though it was commonly referred to as “Suncook”, the name of a nearby river.  The town was incorporated in 1759 and included several other settlements in the areas south of Concord and east of the Merrimack River.  The town was officially named Pembroke after Henry Herbert, the Ninth Earl of Pembroke in Wales.

Set so near to the powerful Merrimack, Pembroke residents constructed mills to survive.  Logging, farming and hunting were essential to the operation of these mills and many “Pembrokians” earned their livings doing just that.  Eventually, the mills closed down and the farms petered out.  Today Pembroke is an industrious town with several large businesses as well as smaller shops and services.
