Ossipee, New Hampshire

Situated just northeast of New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee, the state’s largest lake, you will find the bustling town of Ossipee, a friendly community of about 4700 people.  A popular destination for tourists and vacationers, Ossipee greets them all with open arms and eager smiles.  The town itself offers plenty to keep anyone busy and the surrounding area boasts some of New Hampshire’s finest attractions.  Easy to reach but tough to leave, Ossipee is a favorite among favorites with the residents of this state.

Ossipee’s humble beginnings started as a community of Native Americans of the same name.  New World settlers called the town Wigwam Village and Ossipee itself had a large fort built by the Indians to defend attacks from the Mohawk Indians who resided to the west.  The stockade was destroyed in 1725 but rebuilt by Captain John Lovewell.  Lovewell later died in a battle with the Pequawket Indians who where located in what is now Fryeburg, Maine.  Wigwam Village was named New Garden for a while, but was renamed Ossipee in honor of the land’s original inhabitants – and the nearby Ossipee Mountain Range.  The town was officially incorporated in 1785 and is currently the seat for Carroll County.

Ossipee, NH, is currently a major provider of sand and gravel to Boston, Massachusetts. The material is transported by way of the old railroad tracks which are still functional today.  Ossipee focuses mainly on tourism, however, and caters to that crowd specifically with campgrounds, cottage and house rentals, several resorts, sandy beaches, the Pine River State Forest, boat rentals, ski rentals and more.  You’d be hard-pressed to be without something to do in Ossipee.

Stores abound in Ossipee, along with many restaurants from fine dining to fast food.  The busy town of Conway lies just a few minutes north of Ossipee with all it’s tourist attractions as well, so there’s always something going on nearby if not in the center of Ossipee itself.  Ossipee Lake offers all sorts of watersports and winter activities along with many other year-round forms of fun and exercise in the great outdoors.  You’ll never be bored in Ossipee, especially with Lake Winnipesaukee itself a mere fifteen minutes away.

Ossipee, New Hampshire, is a member of SAU #49 along with Brookfield, Effingham, New Durham, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro, NH.  Ossipee educates local students from kindergarten through the sixth grade at the Ossipee Central School and sends all other resident students to Kingswood Regional Middle and High Schools, both located in Wolfeboro.  Ossipee has no current plan to construct additional schools in town.
