Newfound Lake
About thirty miles north of Concord, NH, the state’s capital, you will find Newfound Lake, the third-largest freshwater lake wholly within the confines of New Hampshire. One of the cleanest lakes in all of New England, Newfound Lake is kept that was through aggressive conservation and constant monitoring of the watershed. The efforts are well worth it, making Newfound Lake one of the most pristine lakes for hundreds of miles around.
Newfound Lake is a large body of water, covering almost 4500 acres, yet all the water in the lake is refreshed twice per year through underground springs and tributaries such as the Fowler River and the Cockermouth River. The lake measures two-and-a-half miles wide and six miles long and is over 180 feet deep at its deepest point. The lake’s outlet is the Newfound River which itself flows into the Pemigewasset River directly to the south.
Newfound Lake is located only about 10-15 miles west of the state’s largest and by far most popular lake, Lake Winnipesaukee. While Newfound Lake is not quite the tourist destination that Lake Winnipesaukee is, it certainly does have its share of visitors each year, as well as year-round residents who love this lake and its surroundings. Newfound Lake is ringed by the towns of Alexandria, Bridgewater, Bristol, and Hebron, NH, all beautiful little towns in New Hampshire’s lakes region.
Activities abound on the lake, including canoeing, kayaking, sailing, power boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming and more. Cottages and summer homes dot the shoreline, alongside the towering pines and sandy beaches giving residents and visitors alike great opportunities to enjoy themselves on this amazing body of water. Newfound Lake is also home to the Wellington Beach State Park in Bristol.
In the cold winter months, Newfound Lake is still alive with activity, from ice fishers and cross-country skiers to snowmobilers and ice skaters. This part of the state is very well known for its bed and breakfasts and couples from all over the country can be found snuggled up in front of a roaring fireplace sipping warm cider in mid-January or sunbathing by the lake in mid-July.
