Mont Vernon, New Hampshire

Mont Vernon, New Hampshire is a small bedroom community in southern New Hampshire.  With only about 2500 residents, this historic little town is the perfect escape from the urban jungle.  A lack of commercial and industrial business allows the character and charm of Mont Vernon to be seen everywhere you look from Purgatory Falls Conservation Area to Lamson Farm, now a town preservation.  Nearby Nashua and Manchester provide for all Mont Vernon's shopping and entertainment needs.

Breaking off from Amherst, New Hampshire in 1781, Mont Vernon incorporated in 1803, only recently celebrating its 200th anniversary.  The town's acreage expanded in 1851 when several residents from a neighboring Lyndeborough parish split off and joined Mont Vernon.  The reason for the unusual spelling of the name has been debated for over a hundred years.  Some believe it is a simple clerical error, some believe it is an homage to the French-Canadians that inhabited the area at the time, but most agree it is a tribute to Mount Vernon, home of General George Washington.  An attempt was made in 1855 to rename the town "Mount" Vernon, but failed.  When agriculture dropped off after the Civil War, several hotels set up shop and Mont Vernon became a tourist spot known for it's beautiful views of lush greenery.  The advent of the automobile eventually ran most of the grand hotels out of business, though a few remain today.

Serenity is a just a step out your backdoor if you live in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire.  Hiking on trails through protected forests or biking down shaded country back roads, the unmatched tranquility of Mont Vernon will have you wondering why you didn't move here sooner.  Convenient, but out of the way of the city hustle and constant noise, Mont Vernon is an hour away from Boston or even less to Hampton Beach.  White Mountain skiing is nearly in your backyard at just over an hour away.  If you're tired of city living and want to relax in the country, Mont Vernon, New Hampshire is closer than you think.
