Originally named Derryfield, it was renamed Manchester in 1810. Because of its location on the Merrimack River and the Amoskeag Falls, Boston developers foresaw a mill town being built. They wanted it to be the “Manchester of America” duplicating Manchester England. They set forth building these mills with brick made in Hooksett NH. The Amoskeag Mills quickly became the largest cotton mills in the world.
According to the 2010 Census, there are approximately 109,595 residents in this community with 34.9 square miles of land. It is divided into east and west sections with the Merrimack River running down the middle. Three bridges connect the east and west sides of this city.
Manchester’s school system is comprised of fourteen elementary schools, four middle schools and four high schools. There are also several private schools and colleges in this community. Part of the curriculum for high school students is they attend classes at Manchester School of Technology where they are taught life skills and make career choices.
Manchester is a culturally diverse community with many different activities for residents. The Currier Museum of Art offers incredible exhibits of fine art. Most of the historic mills are still standing, have been restored and now are home to various types of businesses and residential housing.
