Manchester, New Hampshire
Manchester, New Hampshire is the largest city in the entire northern New England region, which includes Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire itself. Set on the banks of the Merrimack River, Manchester is located in southern/central New Hampshire and is convenient to the mountains, the seacoast and countless Massachusetts towns and cities. Manchester is a bustling industrial and commercial city, yet manages to maintain areas of natural beauty and quiet, private residential areas. Many Manchester residents live and work in the city, eliminating the need for long and tiring commutes while instilling a strong sense of community in their neighborhoods. Voted "Number One Small City in the East" by Money magazine in 1998, Manchester continues to strive for a "hometown" feel while maintaining the commercial and industrial strength that has made this large city one of New England's favorite destinations.
The area that was to become Manchester, NH was first called "Namoskeag" (meaning good fishing place) by the Pennacook Indians. In 1722 John Goffe (for whom Goffstown was named), settled in the area and built a sawmill. The resulting community that developed was referred to as "Old Harry's Town" and in 1735 the village was granted as "Tyngstown" to settlers from Massachusetts. Ten years after the separation of New Hampshire from Massachusetts in 1741, Governor Benning Wentworth chartered the town as "Derryfield". A mill town to the core, Derryfield's location on the Merrimack River proved to be its most beneficial quality. Transporting goods via river, then eventually steam engine then truck helped build Derryfield into the economic powerhouse it is today. The town was renamed Manchester in 1810 and was finally incorporated as a city in 1846.
