Londonderry, New Hampshire
Retail businesses abound in the dynamic, energetic town of Londonderry New Hampshire, located in south-central New Hampshire just 12 miles north of the Massachusetts border. With a population of 25,000 people, the many retailers locating their businesses in Londonderry are nearly guaranteed success. Chain retailers such as Staples, Home Depot, Sears and Hannaford's do well here, but small-business owners also do a booming business of their own. Manchester Airport is a mere 10 minutes away and with access to multiple highways, Londonderry residents can travel anywhere with ease. And while commercial business and industry are vitally important to the town, they are secondary to the importance of maintaining a small-town feel for those who live here. In this vein, Londonderry limits the number of building permits issued each year and aggressively enforces environmentally sound practices in all its businesses. This includes developing the state's first ecologically-minded industrial park for environmentally-aware companies who wish to reduce their effect on the environment.
Originally known as "Nutfield" due to the overabundance of nut trees in the area, the town was initially settled in 1718. In 1722, the town was chartered and named Londonderry, after an Irish settlement of colonists made up primarily of Scotsman. Some settlers of Londonderry moved to surrounding villages and brought with them Irish and Scottish names such as Derry, Windham and Dunbarton. In the early eighteenth century, Londonderry was the largest town in the area and gave land grants to form Derry, Windham and a part of Manchester. In 1790, the burgeoning town of Londonderry had a population of over 2500 residents.
Londonderry's agricultural history is still preserved today by way of the town purchasing the development rights of several major apple orchards and creating an educational tour of the regions fruit- and vegetable-producing areas. These include Dutton Farm, a maple syrup producer, Sunnycrest Farms, growing apples, berries and flowers and Mack's Orchards, well-known for its apple cider. The tour also includes several historic buildings including old schoolhouses and colonial homes.
In addition to healthy commercial growth, Londonderry's population has nearly doubled in the past twenty-five years. The Londonderry School District, SAU #12, has a vision to provide for future students, and a mission to "...provide appropriate individualized academic, social, emotional and physical learning opportunities in order to establish a dynamic foundation for quality education and continued student growth." A pre-school and kindergarten along with three elementary schools helps to ensure these goals are reached by teaching children on a more individual basis.
