Hart’s Location, New Hampshire, is a tiny town situated in the middle of the White Mountain National Forest in the northern part of the state. This 20-square mile slice of land is home to less than sixty residents, giving those who live here plenty of breathing room. Home to Crawford Notch, Hart’s Location is a popular destination for tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of the natural formations found in the mountains of New Hampshire.
The area to become Hart’s Location was first granted in 1772 to Thomas Chadbourne of Portsmouth, but named for Colonel John Hart, an officer who had fought in the French War. The town remained simply “a location” until its incorporation in 2001. Hart’s Location is probably best known for being the first in the nation in the state that’s the first in the nation. Hart’s Location is the always the first town to report the outcome if its presidential primary voting and is often shown on national television once every four years for just this reason.
If you enjoy the great outdoors, Hart’s Location just might be the perfect new home for you. Hiking and rock climbing are popular in this area, as is horseback riding and, surprisingly, golf. There are several golf courses within a few miles of Hart’s Location, each with their own style, layout and amazing scenery that you just won’t find anywhere else in New Hampshire. When it comes to shopping, dining and entertainment, both the nearby towns of Conway and North Conway can satisfy your every need. And when it comes to skiing in the Granite State, Hart’s Location is within shouting distance of several ski resorts and mere minutes away from dozens more. If you’re in the mood for water sports in the the middle of August or winter sports in the deep freeze of January, a short drive south will bring you to the always-hopping Lake Winnipesaukee, the state’s largest body of water.
Hart’s Location is serviced by the nearby town of Bartlett, although it does have its own selectmen and post office. School-age students living in Hart’s Location are educated in neighboring towns due to their own hometown’s small population. Students from grades one through eight attend the Josiah Bartlett School in Bartlett, NH, while high school students attend Kennett High School in Conway.
