Greenville, New Hampshire
The small bedroom community of Greenville, New Hampshire is located in southwestern Hillsborough County, just north of the Massachusetts border. The town's location, at the falls of the Souhegan River, lends to its rich history of textile production in southern New Hampshire. Though the mills have long since fallen silent, the large brick buildings remaining in the center of town are a strong reminder of this small town's significant contribution to the history of New Hampshire's little-known, yet vitally important textile industry. With less than 2500 residents, Greenville is now simply a quiet, beautiful New Hampshire town whose people enjoy the serenity that small, southern New Hampshire towns afford them.
Greenville was once a part of Mason, New Hampshire. Before incorporating in 1872 as Greenville, the town was also known as Mason Harbor, Mason Village and, briefly, Slipton, NH. Utilizing the enormous power of the High Falls part of the Souhegan River, Greenville's textile mills produce cotton and wool throughout the 19th century, well before the town's incorporation. A large producer at the time was "The Colombian Manufacturing Company". Established in 1826, this company produced textile goods for many area towns throughout New England.
With Miller State Park just minutes to the north and Massachusetts' Townsend State Forest even closer to the south, Greenville is the perfect location for countless outdoor activities. Hiking, snowmobiling, fishing, boating, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and horseback riding are all just minutes away when you live in Greenville. Boston is only an hour south and sightseeing or downhill skiing in the White Mountains is only an hour north. No matter what your preference, there's always something to do near Greenville, New Hampshire.
Members of SAU #63, Greenville joins New Ipswich and Mason, New Hampshire in a co-op school district education. Though Greenville maintains its own grades one through four students in the Greenville Elementary School, grades five through eight are taught at nearby Boynton Middle School, in New Ipswich, and grades nine through twelve attend Mascenic High School, also in New Ipswich. As part of the co-op plan, students grade five through twelve in neighboring Mason also attend Boynton Middle School and Mascenic Regional High School, respectively. Due to Greenville's small size and slow population growth, there are no plans in the immediate future to change the current format.
