Grantham, New Hampshire
Grantham, New Hampshire, is a beautiful little town located in the central-western region of the state. Quiet, yet active, this town of about 2600 people has a great location and is very convenient to north-south Route 89 making travel to Vermont or central New Hampshire quick and painless. Grantham’s surroundings make it a sportsman’s (and sportswoman’s) paradise and the scenery in this part of the state is simply gorgeous.
Grantham was originally granted in 1761, but no settlers moved to the area, so it was granted again in 1767. Named New Grantham, the town slowly garnered a population and by 1790, the town was home to over 300 people. New Grantham was incorporated in 1788 and got its name from Thomas Robinson, first Baron Grantham, a vocal advocate of American independence from England. Thirty years later, the town was incorporated again, this time simply as Grantham.
Grantham has led a quiet existence. It was never a center of commerce or a great producer of furniture, cotton goods, grains or any of the other staples that many towns depended on for support. Instead, for most of the past few hundred years, Grantham has been a community of families who worked hard on farms and enjoy each other’s company and their surroundings. The farms were commonplace in Grantham through the years, but today most have disappeared and Grantham remains a bedroom community through and through.
Grantham’s location lends to day trips for skiing and sightseeing, hiking and waterborne recreation. There are several golf courses local to Grantham and Lake Sunapee is just a few minutes down the road. The town itself offers activities for both young and old including tennis, baseball, basketball, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and more. Hunting is popular in this part of the state, since over 75% of the surrounding land is thick forest filled with bull pines and a myriad of other flora. The largest towns in the region are Sunapee, Claremont and White River Junction in neighboring Vermont.
Grantham is a member of SAU #75 and educates resident student from kindergarten age through the sixth grade. Students from seventh grade through twelfth are tuitioned at Lebanon Junior High and Lebanon High School, both located in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
The western side of the state is quite beautiful in its pristine appearance and is a pleasure to behold day after day.
