Center Harbor, New Hampshire

Located at the northern end of New Hampshire’s largest fresh water lake, Center Harbor, NH, is home to only about 1200 year-round permanent residents.  Due to the heavy volume of visitors in both the summer and winter months, Center Harbor’s population can vary greatly, but the folks who make center Harbor their home appreciate the commerce generated by vacationers and tourists alike and welcome them with open arms.

Lake Winnipesaukee boasts a wonderland of fun and exciting things to do all year long and Center Harbor is smack dab in the middle of all the fun.  In the wintertime, snowmobile enthusiasts often make Center Harbor their home base.  With the lake at their doorstep, snowmobile trails that literally lead for hundreds of miles in all directions are easily accessed.  Skiers stay at the many motels and lodges available in Center Harbor then make day trips to the countless ski areas in the region.  Center Harbor also hosts many of the ice-fishing contestants that migrate to the lake once the ice is safe enough to walk on.

The summer months in Center Harbor are just as exciting.  Lake Winnipesaukee becomes a playground for sun worshipers everywhere with boats and watercraft zipping this way and that.  Water skiing, fishing, canoeing and kayaking the countless inlets and harbors, snorkeling, scuba diving and more keep visitors and residents alike very occupied.  Fall brings with it the changing of the foliage and also the leaf-peepers.  Center harbor gives those visitors a warm welcome and a great place to relax after a long day of driving and peeping.

Center Harbor was originally a part of New Hampton but broke off in 1797 to become its own town.  Incorporated that same year, the town gets its name from its location: centered between Moultonborough Harbor and Meredith Harbor, but also from the fact that a prominent family in town was named Senter.  A popular landing for steamships on the lake and stagecoaches on the road, the town soon became an attractive resort for summertime vacationers.  Center Harbor has little industry and focuses on tourism as its main source of income.

Center Harbor is a member of SAU #2 and has no in-town schools of their own, choosing instead to tuition all students to the Inter-Lakes Schools in neighboring Meredith, NH.  There are currently no plans on the table to construct any schools in Center harbor.
