Candia, New Hampshire

Candia is a small, southern New Hampshire town located in Rockingham County.  With only about 4200 residents, Candia holds onto its New England charm by limiting commercial development and focusing on maintaining the quality of life that southern NH is famous for.  With few highways and plenty of thickly wooded forest, Candia is a great place to raise a family or retire in the serene New Hampshire countryside.

The area that was to become Candia was originally settled as a part of Chester in 1748.   For fifteen years the community was referred to as Charmingfare.  When the town finally separated in 1763, it was named Candia by Governor Benning Wentworth.  While the true reason for the name is lost to history, many speculate that the governor named the town after the principal city on the Greek island of Crete.

The first thing you’ll notice about Candia is the peace and quiet.  There is but one highway, Route 101, running through Candia.  Most residential neighborhoods are far from this highway, tucked into the rolling hills and back roads of this beautiful area.  Candia lies just fifteen minutes east of Manchester, the state’s largest city – in fact, it’s the largest city in all of northern New England, including Vermont and Maine.  With such a convenient location, Candia residents enjoy the best of both worlds.  A trip to the New Hampshire shores takes but thirty minutes when you live in Candia, and a trip to the mountains takes only an hour.  When you live in Candia, the fun-filled lakes region of the state, including the Granite State’s largest lake, Lake Winnipesaukee, is only a forty-five minute drive from your front door, about the same distance as an excursion to Boston, Massachusetts.

Candia offers organized youth sports including baseball, soccer and basketball so the kids will have several extracurricular activities to keep them busy after school.  Candia is also home to an extensive trail network for hiking, biking and horseback riding, as well as home to a golf course, museum and municipal park.  There’s plenty to do if you don’t want to leave town, and not far to go if you do.  Candia is convenient to just about anywhere in New England.

The town of Candia is a part of School Administrative Unit #15.  Candia maintains schools for resident children in kindergarten through grade eight and tuitions high school age students at the Manchester Central High School or the Jesse Remington High School, both located in neighboring Manchester.
