Bow, New Hampshire
Bow, New Hampshire, is a busy town located just south of the state’s capital, Concord. Situated right beside the Merrimack River in the southern-central part of the Granite State, Bow residents enjoy the green rolling hills, heavily wooded forests and natural surroundings the Merrimack Valley Region offers. Bow is an industrious town filled with hard working people with strong, traditional New England values. Bow is one of several communities that were created to relieve the population congestion occurring along the seacoast. The town was developed alongside a wide, sweeping curve in the Merrimack River, eventually lending to its name, Bow. When the town was incorporated in 1727, residents of Rumsford, to the north, were vocal about their fears of being segregated from the southern part of the state, taking their complaints all the way to the English Crown, which still governed the colonies. The dispute over this colonization was eventually settled and the town of Rumsford was renamed Concord – the city that would become the state’s capital.
With the powerful Merrimack River at the town’s edge, mills soon sprung up in Bow and the area that once held several lumber and grist mills quickly became known as Bow Mills. Even with the river as a power source, many Bow residents took to farming the land and produced crops and livestock that fed the surrounding communities. The boundary markers are still evident today in the old stone walls that dot the Bow landscape.
Today, Bow is a town of businesses, shops and quiet residential neighborhoods. The 8000 or so residents have worked hard to make Bow an industrious, yet charming community filled with classic New England charm. Often overshadowed by its capital neighbor to the north, Bow remains a wonderful town in which to live. Children are kept busy with the Bow Parks and Recreation Department’s many summer and winter programs, youth sporting events and much, much more. Bow’s location lends to easy travel to the North Country, the Lakes Region and nearly anywhere else you’d like to visit in New Hampshire. Bow is set between north/south Route I-93 and east/west Route 89 making quick travel to the ski resorts up north, Manchester just to the south, Vermont, under an hour west, or even historic Boston, Massachusetts, about an hour’s drive to the south. Bow operates and maintains the Bow School System, SAU #67. The Bow School System consists of the Bow Elementary School, The Bow Memorial School and the relatively new Bow High School, constructed in 1997. All three schools have the student capacity to function well into the future.
