Amherst, New Hampshire
Centered around the beautiful village green at its center, Amherst, New Hampshire is a quiet bedroom community with just under 12,000 residents with most of its commercial and retail businesses located on Route 101A. Set along the Souhegan River, Amherst contains the Chapel Museum, the Wigwam Museum and countless colonial homes. Amherst children attend the highly credited SAU 39 school district which includes the Clark and Wilkins Elementary Schools, Amherst Middle School and the award-winning Souhegan High School (along with students from nearby Mont Vernon).
In addition to several historical sites and museums, Amherst is home to the Amherst Country Club, the Souhegan Woods Golf Course and the smaller Buckmeadow Golf Club. Also located in beautiful Amherst is Baboosic Lake. Swimming, kayaking, canoeing and fishing are allowed on this quiet, 222 acre lake. Many antique shops and flea markets dot the surrounding area of Amherst.
Firmly rooted in agriculture, Amherst, New Hampshire was first established in 1728 as Narragansett No. 3, and later as Souhegan No. 3. In 1760 the town was chartered as Amherst after General Jeffrey Amherst, a British commander at the time. Over the next 75 years, the large town of Amherst was made smaller through land grants offered to create other towns such as Merrimack, Milford and Mont Vernon. In 1769 Amherst became the first seat of Hillsborough County and contained the courthouse, jail and even the whipping post. By 1879 offices governing the county had been relocated to Manchester or Nashua and the courthouse was relegated to becoming the Amherst town hall. Horace Greeley, founder of the New York Tribune was born in Amherst in 1811. A state historic marker designates his home which still stands today.
The village green of Amherst is the most notable landmark in town. The area is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and also is protected by a local historic district. The town center is filled with colonial homes.
Amherst New Hampshire has grown a great deal over the past few decades and school enrollment has been a hot-button issue of late. Many options are being offered in an effort to accept a larger student enrollment while maintaining the high standards of learning that the school district is known for. Currently, students attend the Clark Elementary School from kindergarten to first grade then Wilkins Elementary from second grade to fourth. Amherst Middle School houses grades five through eight and Souhegan High School maintains grades nine through twelve (which includes students from neighboring Mont Vernon). Souhegan High School uses the Coalition of Essential Schools curriculum which involves a less structured student workload that encourages student independence. From the words of their mission statement: "Souhegan High School aspires to be a community of learners born of respect, trust and courage." Their awards include: 1994 NH Secondary School of the Year, 1995 NH Secondary Principal of the Year and 1996 Redbook Magazine's "Best in New Hampshire"
