Sandwich, New Hampshire

The beautiful town of Sandwich, New Hampshire, is located nearly perfectly in the geological center of the state, just north of the always-hopping Lake Winnipesaukee.  Sandwich is home to about 1400 people year-round and many more during the seasonal changes.  Sandwich is situated in a very scenic part of the state, offering picturesque views of the Sandwich Mountain Range, activities in and on the lake, local skiing (downhill and cross country) and much, much more.

Sandwich was first chartered in 1763 by Governor Benning Wentworth.  The land was deemed rocky and inaccessible, so the grant was broadened to include miles of the surrounding area.  This expansion created one of the largest towns (by area) in the state.  The town was named in honor of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich.  Montagu is mistakenly reported to be the inventor of the sandwich.  It is said he requested a thin slab of meat be placed between two slices of bread so he wouldn’t get his hands greasy while he played cards.  History shows, however, that the origins of the sandwich date back to the days of Christ when Hillel the Elder placed lamb and herbs inside unleavened bread.  But don’t tell that to residents of Sandwich, NH.

Settlers began arriving around 1767 and by 1830, Sandwich had a population of 2700, nearly double what it is today.  The town was rife with farms, mills, churches, schools and tradesmen.  As time progressed, however, many left the bustling town to head out west or moved to larger cities where living was a bit easier.  By the end of the 1800’s, Sandwich started to become attractive to vacationers, artists and those seeking an escape from an ever-progressing world.  Today the town has very little industry or commercialism and relies heavily on tourism in the area.  The town is home to a popular covered bridge and each fall hosts the Sandwich Fair.  Sandwich is also home to the New Hampshire League of Arts & Crafts.

Outdoor activities abound in Sandwich.  On any given day you will find people golfing, hiking, camping, boating & fishing, drawing or painting the stunning mountain scenery, bicycling or, in the winter months, ice fishing, snowmobiling, downhill and cross-country skiing, ice climbing, skating and more.  Although the town has a relatively small population, there always seems to be something going on.

Sandwich is a member of School Administrative Unit #2 and a part of the Inter-Lakes School District.  Sandwich operates the Sandwich Central School for grades one through six, including kindergarten and sends all other Sandwich students to Inter-Lakes Middle Tier School and Inter-Lakes High School, both located in Meredith, NH.  Due to their low student population, Sandwich will not be building additional schools any time soon.
