Peterborough, New Hampshire

A small town of about 6500 people, Peterborough, New Hampshire sits in the rolling foothills of the Monadnock mountain range.  Industrious and finely cultured, residents of Peterborough are proud of their humble town and all its trappings.  Just north of the Massachusetts border and close to several large NH cities, Peterborough offers a prime location for young families just starting out or retirees seeking a tranquil environment to enjoy their golden years.  Peterborough has a little something for everyone.

What was to eventually become Peterborough first started out as a land grant to several prominent citizens of Concord, Massachusetts.  These men sold their rights to another group of men who then divided the town into lots and went about attracting new settlers to the region.  Families started coming to Peterborough from Londonderry, NH in order to create farmlands with which they could support themselves.  Incorporated as a township in 1760 by governor Benning Wentworth and renewed in 1762 by King George II, the town’s name is believed to have been derived from the Earl of Peterborough, but no documentation has been brought to light proving this claim.

When you’re in the mountains, you do as the mountaineers.  Peterborough is home to many outdoor enthusiasts due to its lush woodlands, fish-filled ponds, spectacular mountains and meandering streams.  Hunting, fishing, hiking, swimming, biking, skiing, golfing – it’s all here in to enjoy in Peterborough, NH.  The White Mountains and the lakes region of the Granite State are only a short drive from Peterborough.  New Hampshire’s seacoast is a bit over an hour east while historic Boston, Massachusetts lies about the same distance southeast.  Peterborough is convenient to the nearby college town of Keene as well as the state’s most populous city, Nashua, so anything Peterborough residents might need from a megalopolis is close at hand.

Peterborough is a part of SAU#1, the Contoocook Valley Cooperative, which also includes the towns of Antrim, Bennington, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Hancock, Sharon and Temple.  Peterborough maintains its own elementary school (the Peterborough Elementary School) and sends students in grades five through eight to South Meadow School and student in grades nine through twelve to Contoocook Valley Regional High School.  All three schools are located in Peterborough.
