New Boston NH

New Boston is one of smallest communities in Hillsborough County. New Boston was first settled in 1736 and was the first town in the state to be given a land grant. It was incorporated into a town in 1763 and soon developed into a mill town and became home to many different industries. According to the 2010 census, there are 5,321 residents in this community with a landmass of 42.8 square miles. The town is a short 17 miles drive to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and is 67 miles north of Boston MA. It has access to US Routes 114 and 101. It was nicknamed ‘The Gravity Center of the World’ when Roger Babson established the Gravity Research Foundation in 1948.

One of the oldest structures in this town is Dodge Store which opened in 1872 and was owned and operated by generations of the Dodge family. The store closed in 1994 and was sold in 2011. New Boston is also home to the Molly Stark cannon. The cannon was made famous when New Hampshire troops captured it in the revolutionary battle led by General John Stark in Bennington Vermont. It bears the name of Molly Stark because it was named after General Stark’s wife. This cannon was cast in Paris France in 1773 and is maintained by the New Boston Historical Society.

There is one elementary school in this community serving grades K-6.  Middle school students attend Mountain View Middle School and high school students attend Goffstown High School.  Both of these schools are located in the neighboring town of Goffstown. 

Annual events in this community include the Hillsborough County Agricultural Fair.  The fair began in 1947 and is still celebrated every year. The fair features activities for children with music, food and entertainment for the whole family.
