Mont Vernon soon became a tourist town known for its cool climate in the summer, and at its peak there were 5 summer hotels including the Grand Hotel. For decades people from around New England vacationed in Mont Vernon. However, this all changed with the invention of the automobile and came to an end just before the Grand Hotel was destroyed in a fire.
According to the 2010 census, there are 2,409 residents in this community with a landmass of 16.6 square miles. This rural area has all the charm and character of a small New England town. Quite a few original structures are still standing, such as the Fishbones General Store. This store was in business for 120 years before it closed in 2010. It has since been purchased and has reopened.
Mont Vernon has one school, the Mont Vernon Village School, an elementary school that teaches children in grades 1-6. Middle school and high school students attend Amherst Middle School and Souhegan High School. The two towns jointly own these schools.
This community offers many different hiking and biking trails for residents to enjoy during spring, summer and fall and the skiing conditions are superb through the winter months.
Annual celebrations include Lamson Farm Day, where residents of the community gather to celebrate the Mont Vernon's agricultural past and Mont Vernon Spring Gala. Both events offer food, entertainment and games for the entire family.
