Meredith, New Hampshire
Meredith, New Hampshire, is a medium-size town of about 6800 residents living on the western shore of Lake Winnepesaukee. Situated in the heart of the Lakes Region, Meredith is a popular tourist destination with visitors coming in at all times of the year. Bustling yet surprisingly tranquil, Meredith maintains a quiet charm and grace that’s usually found only in towns one-quarter its size.
In the mid-1700’s, a man named Samuel Palmer surveyed most of the land surrounding Lake Winnepesaukee, including the area to become Meredith. The land that would become the town was initially granted by the Masonian Proprietors of Portsmouth, to a group of settlers led by Palmer. The town was dubbed “Palmer’s-Town”, but also known as Second Township, since it was the second town to be Granted by the Masonains. Before long, the name “New Salem” became the town’s moniker since many of the settlers hailed from Salem, Massachusetts. In 1768, the town was incorporated by New Hampshire Governor John Wentworth and named for Sir William Meredith, one of few Parliamentary leaders who opposed the crown’s taxation of the New World colonies.
Today Meredith is a blue-collar town with nearly half the working residents doing so within town lines. Meredith has a very strong economic base and hundreds of businesses that employ not only town residents, but those of the surrounding communities as well. Meredith is a center for shopping, fine dining, entertainment and more. Visitors enjoy the water-borne activities of Lake Winnepesaukee, the attractions of the surrounding area, and, perhaps most importantly of all, Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant. Famous all over for their Turkey Pot Pies and their Turkey Dinners, if you didn’t go to Hart’s while in Meredith, you missed out on something very special. Also famous in Meredith is the Winnepesaukee Scenic Railroad, a train ride that snakes through the scenic countryside and along the lake from Meredith to Tilton to Plymouth. With scenic vistas and stunning views around every corner, be sure to bring a camera so you don’t miss a thing.
Resident children in town are kept busy with organized youth sports such as baseball and hockey, but many kids (and adults alike) spend their time swimming, fishing or just exploring the wilderness that surrounds them. Meredith is a member of SAU #2 and a part of the Inter-Lakes Regional School District, along with Center Harbor and Sandwich, NH. Students in this district attend the Inter-Lakes Elementary School, the Inter-Lakes Middle Tier, and the Inter-Lakes High School, all located in Meredith.
