Monadnock #5 was the designation for this parcel of land before it was truly settled. Intended as one town in a line of defensive positions along the western side of New Hampshire, Monadnock #5 was finally settled around 1768. It was first known as Oxford then New Marlborough before becoming incorporated as Marlborough in 1776. The town got its name from settlers who came from Marlborough, Massachusetts, which itself had been named after John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough.
Mostly a community of farmers and hunters in the beginning, Marlborough soon became known for its high-quality granite. Quarries were developed and soon Marlborough became a leading supplier of granite to the area. These quarries have long since closed.
