Loudon, New Hampshire
A busy little town of about 5000 residents, Loudon, New Hampshire is located in the south-central part of the state, not far from Lake Winnipesaukee and the lakes region. Within shouting distance to the state capital of Concord, Loudon offers residents and visitors alike plenty to see, hear and do.
The area to become Loudon was first granted as a part of two towns, Canterbury and Northfield. Residents in the far reaches of the towns complained that the distance they traveled to the meetinghouse was too far and that the roads to get there were inadequate. They officially petitioned the state to separate them from Canterbury and Northfield and were granted permission and land in 1773. The town was named Loudon after John Campbell, fourth Earl of Loudoun, a soldier for the English Army. Farming and hunting were the order of the day in yesteryear’s Loudon. Though surrounded by pond and streams, few had the power needed to run mills. Today Loudon is an industrious town with plenty to offer growing families and retirees alike.
Loudon is probably best known for the New Hampshire International Speedway, which hosts several NASCAR events throughout the year. The NHIS is also where the annual “Loudon Classic”, America’s oldest motorcycle race, is held during the popular Weir’s Beach “Bike Week” in the month of June. Loudon has quick and easy access to the Route 93 interstate highway, lending to fast travel throughout the state. Concord is only ten minutes away, the state’s largest city, Manchester, is less than thirty minutes from Loudon and New Hampshire’s North Country lies less than forty minutes north. Tranquil, serene and surrounded by natural beauty everywhere you look, Loudon stands proudly as one of New Hampshire’s shining stars.
