The first town pound was built in 1730 however it was not just for dogs as it was built to house all stray animals. The attendants of the pound were called ‘Pounders’.
According to the 2010 Census the population is 24,129 with 42.9 square miles of land.
Originally named Nutfield, Londonderry was founded in 1722 by Ulster Scotsmen and was at the time the second largest town in the state.
Apple trees were brought to Londonderry in the 1800’s and quickly became the major source of agriculture. Apples became so popular that many farms changed from diary to apples. Every year thousands of people visit the orchards for a fun filled day of apple picking.
The advanced school system in Londonderry is second to none. The Moose Hill School is a public kindergarten that includes the Londonderry Early Education Program (Leep). Elementary schools include North School, Matthew Thornton Elementary School and South School. Middle and high school students attend Londonderry High School which was nationally recognized in 2008 when they participated in the pre-ceremonies of the Olympic games in China.
Residents of this community celebrate their heritage with ‘Old Home Days’ an annual event that is held on Londonderry commons that include exhibits, music, food, and contests. ‘Old Home Day’ has been a tradition since its inception in 1900.
Many nationally recognized people have ties to Londonderry including Samuel Bell the 14th governor of NH, John Bell the 18th Governor of NH, Kevin Hunt national football star and US congressman Arthur Livermore all have some connection to this community.
