The town of Littleton, New Hampshire was originally known as Chiswick. The town charter of Chiswick also included parts of what are now known as Lisbon, Dalton, and Sugar Hill. The charter was changed in 1770, to name the town Apthorp, after George Apthorp who was one of the wealthiest heads of a large mercantile factory in Boston. Then in 1784, Apthorp separated into two towns, one of them called Dalton, New Hampshire, and the other one taking up the present name of Littleton, which was named after Colonel Moses Little, who held the title of Surveyor of King's Woods, under Governor Wentworth.

There is also a small private school, Littleton Academy in town.
