According to the 2010 Census it has approximately 8, 275 residents and 15.1 square miles of land. Much of this land is still undeveloped making Litchfield one of the fastest growing communities in the state.

Litchfield has had a few names, originally named Naticook, it was then granted to William Bretton, the Governor of Rhode Island and was renamed Bretton Farm in 1729. It was incorporated into a town in 1734. Upon the death of Governor Bretton, the land was granted to George Henry Lee, Earl of Litchfield and renamed in 1749. Litchfield’s Historical Society maintains the town’s historical sites such as the first church and fire station.

Litchfield set high educational standards with its progressive school system and contains its own schools. Griffin Memorial School grades K-4, Litchfield Middle School grades 5-8 and Campbell High School.

Litchfield offers so much for everyone whether it a round of golf at the Hidden Creek Country Club or hayride at Durocher Farm, the clean air and picturesque setting is a relaxing experience for everyone. Mel’s Funway Park offers visitors a fun filled, year round golf experience. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy Darrah Pond, Parker Park and Litchfield State Forest, where hiking and biking are an invigorating way to spend time together year round.
