Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, is one of ten counties in the Granite State. Located in the southern central part of the state, Hillsborough County is home to thirty-one towns and cities, including the state’s two largest cities, Manchester and Nashua. The county holds almost 400,000 residents making it the most populous county in the state, just ahead of the seacoast area’s Rockingham County. Hillsborough County was one of the original five counties created in New Hampshire back in 1769. The reason for the counties’ creation was that the seat of the NH governments, being located in Portsmouth on the seacoast, made it difficult to dispense justice and simply govern in general. This problem led to the Provincial Act of 1769 which broke up the state into five easily-managed pieces, each with their own county seat. Amherst was originally chosen as Hillsborough County’s seat because it was the largest farming community in the county, but today the Hillsborough County seats are Manchester and Nashua.

Many of the state’s towns along the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border are bedroom communities – home to commuters who work out of state. But this doesn’t mean that Hillsborough County is a sleepy place – far from it.
